Bellydance is booming. Not in the down-at-heel cabarets of Pyramids Road, Cairo or the high-rise hotel restaurants in Dubai, but right here in the U.S.A. Whether they are working on hip circles with Amira in Birmingham, Alabama or trying out traveling shimmies with Marjorie in Cheyenne, Wyoming, tens of thousands of women, the vast majority with no connection to the Arab world, are learning to dance, either for fitness or fun. Their hobby is supported by hundreds of websites (bhuz.com alone claimes to 750,000 hits a month), e-newsletters, regional conventions and at least four print magazines. Bellydance CDs are now a staple of world music labels' output and online stores offer a barrage of training and fitness DVDs that would make Jane Fonda weep. Whether you go for the Cardio Shimmy, check out the Hip Drop Hip Hop, dive into BellyRobics or admit your frailty with Bellydance For Wimps, there is a DVD for every wannabe dancer...
